Hexagon
It’s a small world
Thanks to our imagination, we can create and change anything in the world that comes to mind. But it's difficult to visualise our ideas and make them accessible to others. Unless you're a professional and use HxDR, a cloud-based platform from Hexagon that provides all geospatial data you need to bring visions to life in a digital context.
Together with Hexagon, we have redesigned the way architects, game designers, urban planners, and Co. can interact with a vast amount of data sets through a virtual lens and shape our tomorrow.
Challenge
Geospatial data from around the world
With HxDR, professionals can virtually fly over the world in front of their screens, over cities, landscapes and oceans, and discover and purchase different types of geospatial data to digitally represent landscape features or objects for their projects (e.g. a new airport in Atlanta).
The large amount of available data is unique, but makes the navigation, search and filter functions a critical success factor for the user experience.
"Ensuring smooth WebGL map performance and aligning perspectives was the main challenge. By stepping out of our comfort zones, we crafted a UI that simplifies complex data into a user-centric experience."
Solution
Seeing the world through new glasses
We have analyzed the data, structured it and finally found a new and easier way to filter the data. The user interface became more clear and filtering options more intuitive.
Choose your data category
By activating a filter panel, the user can select one or more data categories. These are then automatically always displayed (colored areas), regardless of where the user navigates to. In this way, you spot directly the data you are looking for, no matter your location. On the left side, you can switch on and off what data categories you want to see on the screen, for example 3D.
Data strip:
At the bottom, depending on your location, you will see all available data types in the selected category(ies).
Discover available data types
A data strip shows the user different types of data available at a location, depending on the selected category. The data displayed reacts to the location (country, city, street) and the user's zooming behavior (distance to the location). You can also switch off and on a specific type if needed. This helps to choose and switch between multiple data types that might be overlapping on the same location.
Conclusion
Look only what is important
Through a smart filtering system, we have brought structure, simplicity and clarity back to the platform. Not only have we helped professionals working with HxDR to quickly and easily find the data they need, but we have also enabled Hexagon to add even more data without losing the user value we created, namely: See the world (of data) through your own glasses, look only what is important to you.
