Bundesamt für Unfallverhütung (BFU)
Life saving simplicity
Every eighth person living in Switzerland suffers a non-occupational accident per year. The Federal Office for Accident Prevention (BFU) does everything it can to keep this figure as low as possible. To do this, the office collects thousands of figures on accidents and compiles statistics. Decision-makers, researchers and those responsible for implementation use the information for prevention.
Our task was to present this myriad of data in the most accessible way possible. An exciting and also important challenge. After all, the health and lives of all of us are at stake.

Challenge
Overwhelmed by data
Let's be honest: the wealth of statistics and analyses was staggeringly large at first glance. The content comes from a wide variety of fields and can also be very deep. How can we make the research of the BFU visually comprehensive and the content dynamically explorable? How do we make the site add value for both researchers and decision makers?
"We knew there was a lot at stake if the population couldn't effortlessly find what they were looking for."
Solution
Digging for the golden solution
A complex task like this requires a lot of research. We conducted numerous interviews with various stakeholders and delved deep into the topic. The insights gained allowed us to create a practicable information architecture. A topic-based structure leads the user more quickly to the goal of his search. And with the help of a clickable prototype, we were able to improve all tools and designs through test iterations to the optimal form.
A library of knowledge
The BFU's comprehensive collection of data and knowledge can be compared to the size of a library. To ensure that everyone can find their way around it, we proceeded like a librarian when building the website. The site was structured into two sections: On one side, a database where users can access the data they want. And on the other side a research section xxx.
Asking the right question
How can we sort thousands of statistics so that they can be found fast? -In that we don't even try to sort the statistics, but create a much better solution: With 2 interactive statistic tools that include 10 filters. The users can set filters like "vehicle", "location", "age of the driver" with a few clicks and generate exactly the statistics they need.
The right stats in your pocket
The data that supports our safety should not only be clear and user-friendly, it should also be accessible everywhere. We created an optimized site for mobile. Now decision-makers can access the relevant data on the fly, even during an important discussion.
Conclusion
Growing without getting bigger
The new BFU page is now seamlessly integrated on bfu.ch. Newly acquired data can be easily integrated into the two existing dynamic interactive statistics. This way, the page has the potential of growing without becoming more complex.
